I have a question about my dog and how he is acting when we brought a puppy home last night?

I My Name is Kori, My boyfriend and I got a puppy when we first moved in together about a year and a few months ago. We named him Odin. He is a blood hound/collie mix. He is a very smart dog. although Odin was our only dog he was always around frinds and familys dogs and we never had a problem. We moved to Oregon in October 06 and so it has been about 9 months since Odin has really been around any other dog. Last night my boyfriend and I got a puppy a 14 week old chocolate lab/Australian shepherd mix. as soon as we brought him home we put odin out back and let the puppy walk around the house for a few mins. and then we brought Odin in. We tryed to keep Odin as calm as we could but he was soooo excited. no matter what we did was just going crazy and crying. Casey my boyfriend took him on a long walk and I stayed home with the puppy. but as soon as they got home Odin was doing the same thing again. It seems like no matter what we do we cant get him to calm down. Now He is doing NOTHING but wanting to lick the puppys penis and hump him. HE is also doing this thing where we is breathing really hard and panting with his mouth open and making a high crying sound. we cant get him to stop it sounds like he was going to make himself pass out. The poor puppy just wants to play and Odin just keeps licking him and humping him.

Last night we got about two hours of sleep and it wasnt because of the puppy it was because of odin making that loud breating crying sound. We love Odin but he is driving us CRAZY!!! he wont calm down or stop crying, we have tryed everything we can think of and nothing is working He is such a Hard headed dog. im Five months pregnant and I dont even want to be around him becuase he is causing so much stress on me. I have never seen Odin like this before,. We thought HE would love a friend to play with but all he wants to do is lick his penis and hump him all day long! we thought about maybe getting him fixed to see if that would help at all. Not only with this problem but with someothers to. But we dont really have the money to do that right now.

IF you could help us That would be great. We love your show we always wonder how you make those dogs listen to you so good. when we cant even keep one dog in line. we dont want to get give away the puppy but if odin doesnt stop we dont know what we are going to do.

Thanks again for any help.

Give your older dog some time. Stop trying to interact and restrain him. He is just checking the dog out and getting use to him. Soon he will calm down and relax. Once he realizes that this is a dog. My dog acted the same way when I bought home a new puppy. But after a few days a calmed down and was nice and loving with him. While the transition is going on make sure you give them both the same amount of attention and love. If your older dog senses that the puppy is taking you away he may become aggressive and highly territorial. Basically be patient, and let them get acquainted.

Edit: The licking and humping thing is normal for dogs that are not fixed. My dogs are not fixed ( I don't really think it is needed) and they lick and try to hump each other all the time.I have a question about my dog and how he is acting when we brought a puppy home last night?
If you couldn't afford to have the first dog neutered, why did you get a second dog? Also, if you just got the puppy last night, it's still very new to Odin. He needs some time to adjust. I doubt that this behavior will continue for very long. He is upset because a strange dog is in his territory and he is trying to establish dominance. Has Odin had any obedience training?

What show are you talking about?
maybe hes use to being alone and hes not ready for another dog to be around yet
Talk to the Humane Society. They have discounted spaying and neutering for pets. If you cannot afford to do this, then what will happen when one of them becomes sick? They do get sick occasionally and have to be taken to the vet for treatment, and then there is the normal expense of shots. I am not trying to be mean, but you are also going to have a baby, and there will be expenses that you may not be prepared for.
That was the biggest mistake was to take your already dog out and put him in the back yard and let the new puppy roam your already dogs territory....You just told your dog he is being replaced.
ummm... when i got a a new puppy... she didn't exactly do the same thing. but she got all depressed.. but the other one was humping her. we got him fixed about 7 months old to stop it but he didn't. so he just keeps humping her. but... i think the only way to get odin better is to make sure to spend the same amount of time with him as before... and kind of just walk them together and introduce him to other dogs to get him better. hope that helps
so wat r u saying ?
